THE CONSCIOUS CAR-DEAL VICTIM
You’re in the market for a new car: you want the best price, and maybe you are afraid the salesman will know you don’t have enough money to buy the car you want (you don’t), so instead of doing research and finding the best car for what you can afford, you get prideful, and then are stuck overpaying and frustrated. I know what I’m talking about: I am a classic “victim” of bad car deals, and without fail will screw them up.
I always want the salesman to think I’m a nice guy because I know that everyone else who comes into his showroom grinds him every day. I also want to believe that if I’m nice to him, he is going to give me a good deal, yet I know each and every time that that’s not going to happen. Sure enough, at the end of each deal, I’ve made a friend who has overcharged me for a car that I already knew, walking in, was probably going to cost me too much. I used to walk out kicking myself, but not anymore. Now, although I can’t seem to stop the cycle, at least I’m a conscious victim. I’ve accepted that I’m always going to allow myself to be taken advantage of in this particular situation. This doesn’t make it okay—I’m still getting screwed in the car deal—but at least I know I’m creating my own misery when I come home with another impractical, overpriced car and my wife just rolls her eyes. I’ve stopped making excuses for my choices.
